The Goodyear Tire Company wasn't founded by the man who invented rubber as we know it. He'd died 30 years earlier. Instead, the company was named to honor the inventor.
Wingfoot Express
One of the biggest innovations the company has produced was long-distance trucking. Prior to 1917, trucks were only used for short hauling from train depots or boat docks. Goodyear started a 1500 mile round trip service to haul raw materials from Connecticut to Ohio and haul tires back. It was nicknamed the Wingfoot Express after the company's logo.
The trucks used pneumatic (air-filled) tires for the first time and the first trip took 28 days, but soon was being made in just 80 hours. Other companies took note and the long haul trucking industry was born. This led cities and states to build better roads and, eventually, today's Interstate Highway System.
Goodyear is still among the largest tire companies in the world and produces a variety of tires for just about any vehicle. At Riverside Tire Center, we've got Goodyear car tires, SUV tires, mini-van tires, light truck and medium truck tires, off road tires, sport tires, performance tires, trailer tires and farm tires.
